Vedic vs Western Astrology: What Actually Differs
Same planets, different clocks and zodiac frames. Here is why your “sign” can change between apps.
Zodiac frame: sidereal vs tropical
Western popular astrology usually uses the tropical zodiac, anchored to seasons (0° Aries at the March equinox). Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, aligned to fixed stars, with an ayanamsa correction (AstroNirnay uses Lahiri). Because of precession, tropical and sidereal placements currently differ by about one sign for many people.
That is why someone who is “Aries Sun” in a Western app may be Pisces Sun in a Vedic kundali. Neither app is “broken” — they answer different coordinate questions.
Emphasis and techniques
Jyotish traditionally emphasises Moon, Lagna, nakshatras, dashas, and predictive house analysis. Modern Western practice often emphasises psychological synthesis, outer planets, and aspects from a tropical frame. Overlap exists — both watch Saturn and relationship houses — but the toolkit and language differ.

Which should you use?
